Instructions Following Oral Surgery

  • Continue to bite on the gauze pack for a minimum of 30 minutes. If there is still a slight bleeding, place more gauze and bite with firm pressure for another 15 minutes. It is usual for an extraction site to ooze a small amount of blood up to 24 hours after oral surgery.
  • After the local anesthetic has worn off, you may eat soft foods and drink liquids (as long as they are not hot). Avoid drinking through a straw.
  • You may brush your teeth at night, but avoid brushing over the extraction site.
  • Do not smoke or rinse your mouth for the first 24 hours following the procedure.
  • After 24 hours, it is beneficial to rinse several times a day with warm, weak salt water. This helps keep the extraction site clean and free of food particles.

  • It is best to take pain medication within two hours after the procedure. Take what you would typically take for a headache, the prescribed medication, and some liquids. Do not take medication on an empty stomach.
  • It is expected to experience a moderate, dull ache for several days after an extraction. Soreness in opening and closing, along with a little swelling, is also normal.
  • If sutures were placed, you would need to return one week later for a brief appointment to remove them and check on healing. Even if the sutures appear to fall out, you should still keep the appointment.
  • If anything appears abnormal or the discomfort continues to worsen, please call the office so we can see you as soon as possible.
